Dr. Richard Tapia held the rank of University Professor at Rice University—the institution’s highest academic title, awarded to only ten individuals in its history. A pioneer researcher in optimization theory and numerical analysis, he was a National Medal of Science laureate and the first Hispanic elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Alongside his scientific achievements, Tapia was celebrated as a champion for diversity who dedicated his career to mentoring and expanding opportunities for underrepresented minorities and women in STEM.

David Medina dedicated 35 years of service to Rice, culminating in his role as director of multicultural community relations in the Office of Public Affairs. Throughout his tenure, he has engaged more than 10,000 people annually through over 100 outreach initiatives, including college workshops, school visits, lectures, and community events. Now retired, Medina leaves a lasting legacy of expanding university outreach and fostering strong community connections.
