Our Mission
At Mariachi Luna Llena, we are dedicated to preserving the vibrant tradition of mariachi music while celebrating its rich cultural heritage with Rice University and the Greater Houston community. Through captivating performances and a strong focus on education, we aim to inspire a deeper appreciation for this cherished art form and ensure it continuation as a thriving and timeless symbol of culture and unity.

bring people together and bridge cultures.
Who is
Mariachi Luna Llena?
Mariachi Luna Llena is a predominantly undergraduate mariachi started by Alberto Rodriguez at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
Throughout the years, Mariachi Luna Llena has grown musically while maintaining the rich tradition of mariachi and Hispanic culture. Since its beginning, we have shown our quality; in our first public performance, Mariachi Luna Llena won first place at the Rice International Fest on October 19, 2013. In the past, Mariachi Luna Llena has performed in private events throughout the Houston area including the State of the Harris County Address, an opening act before the Grammy-winning rock band Los Lobos at Miller Outdoor Theater in 2015, the Houston Rodeo’s Mariachi Invitational in 2023, and Houston’s Reliant Lights Mayor's Holiday Spectacular.
Every year, we offer a free public concert at the end of the spring semester called the Spectacular. The Spectacular is our way to thank the Houston community, an opportunity to showcase our progress in that year, and a chance to publicly recognize graduating members.
Our Sponsors
With the generous support of Dr. Richard Tapia and Mr. David Medina, we became an official Rice University organization on October 3rd, 2013. Mariachi Luna Llena believes that music brings people together, transcending language to create intercultural connections.
