Rebekah’s Summer in Seattle: World Cup, Hiking, and Catching Up ⚽🌱🫂

Hola Guitarrón Chronicle enjoyers! Welcome to our latest, last, but certainly not least chronicle update from our one and only Rebekah!

‧₊˚❀‧₊˚. Rebekah’s Summer Update 8-23-26 ‧₊˚❀‧₊˚.

Hi everyone!!

First of all, I have missed my mariachi family so dearly. After spending five months abroad, it felt so good to finally be back home. I got to spend a few days between Dallas and Houston, catching up with friends, eating all the food I had been missing, and soaking up some much-needed time with family before heading off to my summer home: Seattle!!

Houston

Oh, how I missed the food in Houston.

One of the things I was most excited about coming home to was the food. We are genuinely so lucky to live in such a melting pot, with access to so many different cuisines all within a short drive. There is something so comforting about being able to come home and immediately eat all your favorite foods.

I also got to see some of my friends who I hadn’t seen since December, when we all left for winter break. Five months abroad feels like forever when you’re away, but somehow everyone slipped right back into their normal routines as soon as we were together again.

After a few days in Houston and Dallas, it was time to head to my summer home!!

Seattle

I spent this summer in Seattle for my internship, and honestly, Seattle has officially become my third home after Arlington and, of course, Houston.

There is something about the Pacific Northwest that I absolutely love. The mountains, the water, the trees, the weather (yes, even the random rain), and just how easy it is to escape into nature made Seattle such a fun place to spend the summer.

I was also lucky enough to have some pretty great people around me, which made a new city feel a lot more familiar. Between work, exploring the city, meeting new people, and trying to make the most of every weekend, the summer flew by.

And speaking of making the most of every weekend...

World Cup Season!!

Wowowowow.

I absolutely LOVED World Cup season, and it honestly powered so much of my summer experience. One of my favorite things about being in Seattle was getting to go to watch parties, whether that meant watching games by the pier or finding a local sports bar packed with people cheering for their countries.

It was such an easy way to meet people and connect with people I probably never would have crossed paths with otherwise. 

And I even got to go to the Spain vs. Portugal match while I was home for the Fourth of July!!

Definitely one of the highlights of the summer.

Hiking Season

Another thing that absolutely powered my summer was hiking!!

The PNW is probably one of my favorite regions in the U.S., or possibly ever. There are genuinely endless hikes to go on, and every single one somehow feels completely different. One weekend you can be surrounded by giant trees, and the next you're looking at mountains, lakes, waterfalls, or views that genuinely don't look real.

I quickly realized that hiking was going to become one of my favorite ways to spend my weekends. After sitting at a desk all week, there was nothing better than getting outside, getting some exercise, and spending an entire day somewhere that felt completely disconnected from work.

I'll spare you from me rambling about every single hike I went on, so instead I'll leave you with a picture from my favorite :)

San Francisco

And finally, a little weekend trip to San Francisco!

As we all know, many of our seniors have officially left us, so naturally, I had to go visit some of them while I was in San Francisco for the weekend.

I got to see Joel, Guitar, and Brian, Guitar, and it was so nice catching up with them and getting to spend some time together again. One of the weirdest parts about college is watching everyone slowly scatter across the country after graduation. People who you used to see all the time are suddenly living in completely different cities, so getting the chance to reunite somewhere new makes it feel even more special.

It was a short weekend, but it was so much fun getting to catch up, explore the city, and pretend for a little bit that we were all back at Rice again.

Looking back, I feel like this summer was the perfect combination of everything I love: meeting new people, exploring new places, being outside, watching way too much soccer, eating good food, and getting to see old friends along the way.
